The About Me portion is always the toughest for me to write. I know all about me and I want to share that with you but what are you really interested in? I know what I tell my Sonix Studio clients when they ask what they should write in the About Me section so I should probably take my own advice.
Here is my story:
I grew up in New York and lived there for 34 years until I got divorced and moved 1600 miles to my new home in Texas. I love New York and miss it but that does not mean that Texas hasn’t been great to me because it has. It was here that I discovered endurance sports and specifically the sport of triathlon. Triathlon has given me new life through all the challenges it presents. I no longer look at life the same way and I can say that is in part due to my endeavor into this sport.
The about me wouldn’t be complete if I didn’t talk about my affinity for cooking. Cooking has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. As a little kid growing up in a Puerto Rican household with parents who did not have a lot of money home cooking was what my parents, specifically my mother, did. I could be found sitting in the kitchen watching her mix, combine, fold and serve delicious meals on a daily basis.
Along the way to the current me I figured out that the cooking that Mom was doing wasn’t the healthiest for me. When you add in the rigors of triathlon training and racing there has to be more to food than just taste. While it must taste good it must also provide the proper nutrition to fuel the body. The meals that Mom made were not going to do that. At that point the marriage of cooking and endurance sports was born.
We all go through different phases in life and while some may stick there are probably more that don’t. One phase, that is no longer a phase but a lifestyle, has been my change to a plant-based lifestyle. Why do I use plant-based to describe myself? It is because labels like vegan and vegetarian, paleo and carnivore are over-used. I do not eat meat but do eat eggs. I avoid wheat and dairy as much as possible but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t seep into my ‘diet’ every now and again because it does.
I am currently training for my 3rd Ironman with the hopes of qualifying for Kona one day. If I don’t make it will it kill me? No, because as I said this life of a plant-based, vegetarian, vegan endurance athlete has been terrific. I try different foods and different sports and do my best at them. I will not back down from a challenge and will always give it 100% (I don’t believe in this 110% non-sense since you cannot give more than you got!)
If you think that is all then you would be wrong. A complete About Me wouldn’t be complete if I didn’t mention my wife Karen who has given me nothing short of full support on everything I do. She also gave me the honor of being the step-father to her son and that has made our miss-mash life complete. Two people from different backgrounds and different parts of the country living a happy life with Cooking, Training, Eating And Racing at the center of it all.
If I were to choose 5 words to be used in an About Me they would be: Always Changing For The Better!
