Black Friday

Black FridayOur Thanksgiving starts very early (12p) and ends by 3p.  We only have my step-son for those few hours and so we came home after that.  Fell asleep quickly and then stayed up all night to go to Walmart at 10p (yes that is up all night considering I am usually falling asleep in couch at 830p) since the little one had items on his list for Christmas that we could get there.

OMG. OMG. OMG.  NEVER AGAIN!

It was a total mad house, but we found parking rather quickly.  I grabbed a shopping cart from a family that was done shopping.  Walking through there was like practicing your car driving.  So I decide to park the cart and wait while Karen went through the toy section.

While sitting there here is what I saw:

1- Women whom I could not tell if they were overweight or pregnant.  A total of 15 women like this.  It was nuts.

2- More sweatpants going by me than at the start of a race in January before everybody de-robes and runs in lycra/spandex.

3- A guy with a camouflage polo shirt.  What would you need that for?  To hide out in the Board room?

4- A dude with a flat top from the 80s.  Serious Kid and Play look.

5- A person whose cart was filled with a minimum of 6 Ninja blenders.  What the f do you need that many ninjas for?

6- People stopping in the McD’s before walking into the store.  It was Thanksgiving just a few hours earlier……how could you possibly want more food?

I was at my wit’s end and shaking so what did we do?  We went to Toys R Us…….OMG the line was out the door to get in…….so onto Target we went.  This store did not open until Midnight and it was 11:30p at the time.  The line wrapped around the shopping center.  A good 3000-4000 people I would say……home we went……

This was once in a lifetime and I’ll never do it again

When I read your comment on my post about how easy peasy you thought it was, I did a rear reply back saying, there is nothing easy about Black Friday!! !

Crazy, really crazy, and what gets me is that retail shops say that these prices are usually the same for all of the holidays, not just that friday

First let me say, you are one brave man to go out on the eve of Black Friday …and insane as well! I guess that makes for a good ironman candidate.
Second, there is no way you saw Kid from Kid-n-Play b/c I saw him about 30 minutes ago. I swear! I almost died when I saw this guy walking down what I like to call fast food lane, also known as Suitcase city. Need I explain the area any further? Anyway, maybe this hairstyle and look is coming back.
Third, all the gift ideas you listed are on my “short” Christmas list.

Annie made me go out to a Kohl’s once on Black Friday to get her something. It was awful. I got in a screaming match with some bitch in the parking lot when she almost hit me with her car. Never again!

WOW. I can’t believe you went out on Black Friday.

I am happy to say I have continued my streak of not going to a single store the Friday after Thanksgiving :) Sounds like you might be starting a similar streak starting next year!

Ugh. You couldn’t give away the stuff for free AND pay me to go out on black Friday!

I am pretty frugal but I would rather chew glass than endure that madhouse!

I didn’t shop until after noon today so it wasn’t too bad, but I don’t think I got that many “deals”. I just really needed to start shopping and a friend invited me to go. Your Santa must have a much bigger budget than my Santa because most of that list in your post is out of my reach. And my list is LONG! Being a newbie in this sport is likely to break the bank. Today Santa picked up a sweet long sleeve running shirt with a cool little pocket in the front side seam (40% off at Old Navy – had no idea they had active wear=$16). I’m pretty sure he’s going to put some speed laces (just b/c I think they’re cool) and a slim RoadID in my stocking. Still trying to get the guts up to put any number of more expensive items on my list – namely: wetsuit, bike, cycling shoes, Garmin, etc. All in good time I’m sure.

I did that once. I lost my mind and I went shopping on black Friday night…NEVER AGAIN is what I said and I never did it again.

I did that last year at Best Buy for a new laptop – what a freak show! That and the whole thing is such a bait and switch. There were probably 2000 people in line for about 10 each of every door buster item. Let’s band together and vow NEVER AGAIN, ha ha! At least you weren’t shot, pepper-sprayed, or involved in that riot over $2 waffle makers. Sheesh. Personally, I was able to knock out about half my shopping list with online deals, at home, in my bed, with a piece of pie and a cup of coffee. That’s what I’m talking about!

  11. You have to be a Black Friday Ninja. I am writing a new book “The One Hour Black Friday Shopper”.
I got to Walmart at 9:30. Picked out my wife’s cruiser bike ($69… normally $139) Stood second in line (most were waiting for the electronics that weren’t open yet) and out by 10:10pm. The hardest part was getting out of the parking lot…
Then Sports Authority opened at 5am. I knew bikes here would still be around at 7am. So I leasurely went there at 7. Picked up swim googles (2 for 1), Long sleeve fleece shirts for the boys for our North Carolina ski trip (we are novices…. 2 for 1) and another bike ($100…. normally $200) for the boys since they love to destroy bikes.
Then off to Burlington Coat factory to pick up the rest of the boys ski clothes. Jackets, water proof ski pants, hats… $250 (not sure what I saved here).
Then back to Walmart to return a purchase I made by mistake. I asked the clerk about the madhouse at 10pm the night before…. he told me there were two fights over stuff they still have at 9am… nice…. Then I bought some jeans for the boys…. 4 pair for $9.95 each.

Ninja buying… look for the book on Amazon…
