The sweet science for me while I was growing up was boxing.  My father and I would sit on the couch and watch ABC's Wide World of Sports with Howard Cosell and Jim McKay.  I watched fighters like Roberto Duran, Sugar Ray Leonard, Marvelous Marvin Hagler and Thomas 'Hit Man' Hearns (isn't Hit Man a great nickname?  I need a good nickname like that.) The announcers would always talk about the science of boxing.  It was more than just the physical attributes these men had to have, but also the mental strength to overcome their opponents and...

The household of endurance athletes looks no different then that of the non-endurance athlete if you ignore the piles of sneakers, piles of food, baskets of laundry and ......wait a minute the house is just like any other house isn't it? Yesterday my friend (yes I hang around national publication writers) Susan Lacke wrote an article titled Triathlon Love: Moving in with your Ironman?  Have these three conversations first and then I started looking around our house and noticed that everywhere I saw a hint of endurance sports.  As you know...

Just is a word I hear quite often when discussing endurance sports with others.  Let's list a few of the things that get the adjective (it is in this case, trust me) JUST: I just ran 3 miles. It was just a half-ironman. It was just a 45 minute swim. I did well but it was just a short race. The list can go on and on and it is the one word, besides the word like, in the English language that I probably dislike the most. If I were to use the word just to describe how I was just a few short years ago this would have been the descri...

Ironman Arizona training is now into its third week and today (Monday June 18th) I can say I had the first good swim of the entire cycle to date.  For some reason my swim has been nothing but a fight between me, the water and my brain.  My body wants to cooperate but my head keeps fighting me about it.  I haven't been dreading the swim but there has been some trepidation about getting into the water. Today that changed.  I told myself that even though it called for threshold pace swims to just swim. Don't worry about the clock and just s...

Ironman Arizona is still nearly 5 months away but I am getting mentally focused for this day.  Having the experience of having just raced Ironman Texas I want to put my lessons to good use and train over the next 20+ weeks with the focus on making AZ a fast race. With that in mind I have been emailing with Jeff about getting the bike setup so I am not carrying around extra weight, especially since the Arizona course is flat. Having the ability to pound away and not lug unnecessary items is going to be a tremendous benefit.  Between emails ...

[caption id="attachment_6045" align="alignright" width="240" caption="The AZ State Flag Is Just Really Cool Looking"][/caption] Ironman Arizona training has started already and the first week was not easy to say the least.  Hill work plus speed intervals plus temperatures reaching the 90s and humidity at a bazillion percent and you have the recipe for a tough week. All that being said I am very excited to be back in the saddle, so to speak.  Getting long rides in and working on my goals for IMAZ has been invigorating.  I am using Jeff'...

[caption id="attachment_6021" align="alignright" width="300" caption="Quite Possibly My Swan Song In The RnR Series"][/caption] Rock And Roll Marathon Series - well, yes I did it again. I ran another Rock and Roll Event.. and I truly believe it will be my last. I am thankful for these large events as they motivate people to get out and run – but in my honest opinion they have gotten way too crowded and chaotic and here are my pet peeves: Lining up at the front of the race in the lower numbered corrals and then running slow. Abruptly ...

[caption id="attachment_5997" align="alignright" width="240" caption="Ironman Arizona: Let's Get It On!"][/caption] Ironman Arizona is in 168 days or 24 weeks.  What does that mean for me?  It means that training for this race starts today.  I am very excited to get the training going for this race because there are so many people out there that are training right now and I felt out of the loop for two weeks while I recovered. I have set up my spreadsheet to track my mileage for IMAZ and to compare it to IMTX.  I would think that ...

We are officially into race season and that means that training is picking up or that the 'A' race is here.  Either way we all go through phases of questioning why we are doing what we do.  Most of us can answer with:  because I love it.  You have found the ability to dig deeper than the person next to you but when the temperatures turn 90* and the humidity is even higher than that or you are on Mile 20 of the marathon you have questions and you are seeking answers to keep putting one foot in front of the other. You will talk to yourself...
