Chipotle Pepper Spiced Black Bean Burger

Chipotle peppers are a favorite ingredient in my kitchen. I absolutely love the smokey and spicy flavor of the peppers and believe they can bring just about any dish more life. Last night while I was riding my bike on the trainer I started thinking about what to have for dinner and my original thought was to have a TLT (Tempeh, Lettuce, Tomato) sandwich but when I opened the refrigerator it was like when Jules opened the briefcase in Pulp Fiction. The black beans shined like gold and then my mind started running.

What goes good with black beans? Onions? Yes. Avocado? Yes. Chipotle Peppers? HELL YES!!!! And what is a burger/patty dish without fries.....grab that sweet potato before my wife does.

At that point dinner was just a matter of time and having just finished an hour on the bike I did not have time before I wanted to start eating my arm.

Since my inspiration came along late last night I did not have time for the patty to setup and so it fell apart but nothing a spoon couldn't handle. The recipe below will give you the setup time so that the patty does not break apart when you cut or bite into it.

Pepper Spiced Black Bean Burger

This recipe for vegan chipotle pepper and black bean burgers is quick and easy but packed with tons of flavor.

PREP TIME 1 Hour Minimum (Best at 4-5 Hours)
COOK TIME 30 Minutes

 Ingredients (Makes 1 LARGE patty)

  • 1/2 can of black beans
  • 25g spanish onion (Sliced)
  • 1/2 large avocado
  • 2 chipotle peppers in adobo sauce (chopped)
  • 4 cloves roasted garlic (chopped)
  • 2 slices of a ripe tomato
  • 2 slices of bread. Or a bun. Or bib lettuce. Or cabbage leafs.
  • 1 Tbsp of flours (I use garbanzo flour)
  • 1 Tbsp of bread crumbs
  • 1 sweet potato (cut into french fry sticks)

  1. Smash the black beans leaving a few chunky.
  2. Add in the chopped chipotle, chopped roasted garlic, bread crumbs and flour.
  3. Once combined form into a patty and place on wax paper. Put in refrigerator for at least one hour but 4-5 hours is ideal.
  4. When the patty is ready smash the avocado and place it on both slices of the toasted bread.
  5. Add the tomato slices to the avocado and set aside.
  6. In a pan add 1 Tbsp coconut oil and allow to melt then add in the onion and allow to caramelize over low flame.
  7. In a seperate pan add 1 Tbsp coconut oil and allow to melt then add in the sweet potato over low flame. Turn after they begin to turn golden brown. When done remove from pan, add salt and set aside.
  8. In same pan place the black bean patty and increase heat to medium. This will provice a crunchy texture to the patty while keeping the middle soft. After one side has developed a crunchy exterior flip and allow to create another crunchy exterior.
  9. While the patty is cooking add the onions to one side and then when the patty is done add it to the top of caramelized onions.
  10. Place the top on and plate with the seasoned sweet potato fries.
  11. Take a picture and post to Instagram. Tag me so I can see your creation.

  • The reason I use both bread crumbs and flour is to help draw out the moisture. With the addition of the chipotle peppers there is more moisture than normal so you may have to increase the amount.
  • The addition of condiments such as pickles, mustard, sriracha or ketchup is highly recommended. I was in such a rush to eat that I left all of them off but it was still damn good.
