Vega One Sport Sugar-Free Energizer Product Review

[caption id="attachment_8811" align="alignright" width="225"]vega one - energizer - sugar free Vega One Sport Sugar-Free Energizer[/caption] Disclosure: This is a review for the Vega One Energizer product that was sent to me for free.  I did not pay for this product and was not asked to provide a positive review in exchange for the product.  The views and opinions expressed in this post are mine. I have reviewed Vega One products in the past (you can read my past post here) and so when I was contacted by the company again to review the Vega One Energizer I readily agreed.  If you have read my blog post and my product reviews in the past then you know I hold no punches.  Not everything is the second coming of sliced bread and sometimes things are bad/awful for my liking.  It doesn't mean that you won't like it but this is just my opinion about the products that have been sent to me. When the Vega One Energizer appeared at my door (ok, it was delivered and did not descend upon my house from the heavens) I put it in the pantry and forgot about it.  I have been doing whatever training I want whenever I want and so it never occurred to me to get the product into a water bottle.  There was little to no intensity and very little structure so by the time I was an hour into my ride I would remember that I should have used the Vega One Energizer. Wising up I finally put it on the counter to remind myself to use it.  Well after the second or third time of not using it despite it being on the counter I decided to read the label.  Clean products for sure, but it said that you should drink it 20 minutes prior to a workout.  Well that wasn't happening so I took it to the next level and just poured 3 packets of each flavor into a 24 oz water bottle to take with me on my long rides this past weekend. On Saturday I used the Acai Berry flavor and I will say that I was quite surprised by the taste.  It was strong enough to make you feel like you were drinking more than water, but it wasn't so strong that you felt as if you were drinking the dreaded G-stuff.  As I mentioned Vega One Energizer is to be taken 20 minutes before low intensity or short duration workouts.  Here I was going on a 3 hour ride and decided to let this be my fuel/hydration for the ride.  I was going to be riding at a low intensity as I 'taper' for the Hotter Than Hell Hundred Bike Race and 13 mile Trail Run this coming weekend.  My buddies and I were just going to tool around North Dallas and I thought this would be great.  Not to mention the other facts that are proclaimed by Vega One: Use Vega Sport Sugar-Free Energizer to:
  • Enhance mental focus
  • Increase energy
  • Boost endurance
On this ride I felt great and when my friends peeled off I kept going and was able to hit the road a bit harder for the last hour than the previous 2 hours.  Was this a result of Vega One Energizer or the awesome weather we have been having in Dallas lately?  I cannot tell you but from a taste perspective as well as a not overly sugary aftertaste that this was a product I could see using for working out. On Sunday I used the Lemon Lime Vega One Energizer and as I was filling up the water bottle the mud looking liquid was an immediate turn-off.  I thought that I should bring another water bottle with me in case this stuff was just awful and from the looks of it that is where it was headed.  This day was going to be another easy ride with the 1st hour being a bit more intense than the last two hours but nothing really pushing my limits or maximum heart rate.  Again, not the ideal conditions based on the prescribed method of taking the product but if I was going to push this off again I was never going to remember. When I set out on the 2nd hour I decided to start taking the Lemon-Lime.  Doing my best to not see the liquids color I drank and for me this is too much like the Lemon-Lime PowerBar used on the Ironman race course.  The taste is extremely strong for my taste buds and turned me off.  Since I had nothing else with me I drank the entire bottle but the taste never grew on me.  That being said there is no sugary after taste like you would get in Gatorade or PowerBar and that was a benefit. Was my mental focus enhanced?  In comparison to what?  I was riding my bike in the streets of North Dallas so you have no choice but to be wide awake and paying attention to all around you.  Did my energy increase during the ride?  I would say that I was able to ride consistently throughout the day but I again I was taking it easy throughout the ride and not pushing my limits.  Did I have a boost in my endurance? I doubt it since I was only using this product for the second time so making a statement that it did would be unfounded. This much I can say about the Vega One Energizer product:
  1. Acai Berry tastes good and doesn't leave an after taste.
  2. Lemon-Lime is a very strong flavor and has a murky look to it.
  3. Since this product has very few calories I would compare it to Nuun and would take the Acai Berry flavored Vega One Energizer over the Nuun because of its natural products.
If you are looking for something that will flavor your water for your short workouts then give the Vega One Energizer Acai Berry a try.  You can also try the Lemon Lime but I suggest putting it into a water bottle that cannot be seen through.

Have You Tried Vega One Energizer? Thoughts?

I grew up in New York and lived there for 34 years until I got divorced and moved 1600 miles to my new home in Texas.  I love New York and miss it but that does not mean that Texas hasn’t been great to me because it has.  It was here that I discovered endurance sports and specifically the sport of triathlon.  Triathlon has given me new life through all the challenges it presents.  I no longer look at life the same way and I can say that is in part due to my endeavor into this sport.
