Ironman Texas training for Week #6 was certainly the first step in a new direction.  The rubber met the road this week with a swing from fantastic to craptastic and back again a few times.  I was emotionally and physically spent after this week and that let me know that we are about to get to work FOR REAL! Numbers to date are: Swim:  29.6 miles (3% of total miles) Bike:    689 miles (76% of total miles) Run:    189 miles  (21% of total miles) Total Miles:   907.6 Swim:  19 Hours (24% of total hours) Bike:    ...

Where do I begin with this review.  I found Iron War by Matt Fitzgerald [caption id="attachment_5184" align="alignright" width="252" caption="Dave Scott - Mark Allen in the 1989 Ironman"][/caption] to be just incredible and not only because of the storytelling of the greatest Ironman race ever but because of the scientific information that came with it.  I have read Chris McCormack's book I'm Here To Win as well as the book  You Are An Ironman and Iron War is better than both. For those that don't know Iron War took place in 1989...

I participated in the widely circulating game of 11 Randoms and it has been cool to learn a lot about all of you through this game of tag, but yesterday while pedaling and running to nowhere (on the spin bike and treadmill) I had a lot of thoughts going through my head of the things that have been driving me crazy lately.  I tried to remember them all but I'm sure I've missed a few.  With that as way of background I am bringing you 11 Random Rants and there are no questions to be asked, no tagging to be done.  If you want to comment with a r...

We have entered into Week #4 of the Frugal Grocer and I am going back to review Week #3 for you.  Before we get to that I would like to point out that in the top right hand menu bar I have added the Frugal Grocer as well as having a drop down for recipes.  As we go through the weeks I will be highlighting one of the meals I made and providing you the recipe.  If you need the recipe 6 weeks from now and remember that it was a breakfast item all you have to do is go to the menu for Frugal Grocer and then click on the link for Breakfast Recipes...

5 weeks of training are done and in the books.  My first reaction to this is:  Holy $h*t this is going by fast and will I be ready for the 140.6 come mid-May.  My second reaction is:  This has been a lot of fun and I'm learning more and more about my body everyday and that can never be taken away from me. This training has been completely different for me in terms of my mindset.  I want to get to the starting line healthy but I also know that it is going to be a long day and I have to pace myself properly.  With that I have been enjoyi...

[caption id="attachment_5149" align="alignright" width="300" caption="Naps are ok, but not in place of working out."][/caption] The person who really wants to do something finds a way; the other person finds an excuse.  ~Author Unknown I am the BEST person to give excuses. When I am running, if I see a sign ahead, I think it must be a stop sign, I need to stop. If a runner in front of me stops, I think ‘oh I better stop too..‘ The list of excuses goes on.. its raining, snowing, windy - I have a cold,  sinus infection, headache..  A...

Today is January 22nd, 2012 and it marks the two-year anniversary of my marriage to Karen.  I was very fortunate to have found Karen when I did.  I was luckier when she said yes when I asked her to marry me.  And I am even luckier than that because she has stuck with me through all of my crazy ideas and thoughts for the past two years. There are so many highlights to our marriage but I think the one that stands out the most was the day I asked her to marry me.  Here is the story: It was November 8, 2009 when I left the house to watch ...

I was tagged by Marlene of Mission To A(nother) Marathon and not because we are friends but because I happened to be a person who was one of the first 11 to comment on a blog post of hers.  So I'm not sure if I'm flattered that she chose me, which in reality she didn't actually choose me so I'm not flattered but I'm doing it anyway. There are strict rules to this little game of tag and I had to read them three times to make sure I was following them correctly as I don't want to be thrown in Blogger Purgatory (which would mean having to go b...

[caption id="attachment_5123" align="alignright" width="225" caption="Speed Kills?"][/caption] I was on Endurance Corner reading through their articles about limiters, which is very good and something that you should check out when I came across an article titled If I Could Just... by Justin Daerr that spoke to how lucky I am.  I am very fortunate to have been able to have met Karen when I was at a low in my life.  She was able to inject the old me back into the world and I can't thank her enough. I am also very fortunate to be able to...

The NFL Championship games are this weekend and I am on pins and needles.  Outside of triathlon, football is my favorite sport to watch.  There is something about the competition and the investment you make as a fan that gets me fired up. Last week I made my predictions based on food that best represented each time.  I picked 2 games right and picked 2 games wrong.  Pizza won over Bratwurst and Crab Cakes won over Bar-B-Que.  On the other hand Clam Chowder pummeled the omelet and Cioppino had a major comeback over Jambalaya.  What does...
