As humans we are creatures of habit and while change is a good thing it may not be so good when it comes to training for endurance events. If you have read this blog long enough you know that my weeks are setup the same from week to week and that I get up at the same time everyday except for Friday.  I believe by doing this I am training my body to be prepared to go and not confusing it to the point where it has no idea what is happening next.  Yes we want to confuse our muscles so that they get stronger but you confuse them throug...

As you know by now my swim has been the hardest discipline for me to improve upon whether it was getting faster or swimming straighter.  I have truly embraced swim training though because it has been so hard.  I love the challenge of tackling something that is not easy.  I love the challenge of staring fear in the face and saying I'm going to do this and you fear are going to get out of my way. As is typically the case I search for articles and ideas and thoughts on how to improve and figure out if they will work for me.  This is a pure ...

With my last triathlon of the season having been completed on Sunday at Austin 70.3 I started thinking about what this off-season would represent for me.  What I would focus on during this stretch.  I have a half-marathon coming up in two weeks and then 4 weeks after that I am going to make my first (and possibly last) attempt at a Boston qualifying time at the Las Vegas marathon. Neither of those events is a triathlon so what do I focus on that is tri specific in this offseason.  Then it dawned on me that I don't have much of...

[caption id="attachment_4543" align="alignright" width="160" caption="Learn from your past to make a better future daily!"][/caption] It has taken me a couple of days to process this race in more than just a race report format.  In the car ride home I went over what could have been done better or done differently to improve my results. Some may read that and say to themselves:  Is this guy for real?  He just set a 14 minute PR at this distance and he is looking for ways to get better.  My response to that is:  YES.  If I settle for ...

I will start by saying it was a very good day at the office overall, but with any race you have to take the time to analyze and understand where you can get better so that you keep improving. My second statement is a huge Thank You to all of you that sent text messages (I can't believe I gave my number to so many of you.....ha!), Facebook and Twitter mentions.  It was overwhelming and it helped me get through this race, in the good times and the bad. Let's jump right into this and I will try to keep it as short as possible. PRE-RACE: F...

Game Time! I will swim faster, harder and smarter than ever before. I will ride faster, harder and smarter than ever before. I will run faster, harder and smarter than ever before. When all is said and done I will have crossed the finish line with nothing in the tank. When all is said and done I will raise my arms in victory regardless of time because I beat the course. When all is said and done I will smile the smile of all smiles and know that beyond a shadow of a doubt I DID IT! Thank you all for your support through a very hot summer...

Watch the video for an announcement and then read below for my goals: Whether you are competitive or not when you enter endurance or multi-sport races you have a goal.  There is the goal to just finish or the goal to be faster that day than you have ever been.  Maybe your goal is to beat your neighbor.  Whatever it is you have a goal, and I am no different in that aspect.  I have goals for this Sunday's 70.3 Longhorn, taking place in Austin, Texas. As I wrote two days ago I have not had taper madness, but instead have been in Zen taper ...

[caption id="attachment_4506" align="alignright" width="192" caption="I'm In The Zen Zone!"][/caption] Today is Wednesday and this is the third day of taper week and what's crazy about this crazy week is that it is not crazy.  I don't have the requisite taper madness going on.  I am not sitting here worrying that I did not train hard enough or put in enough miles.  I am not concerned about nutrition or hydration.  I have no concerns over travel.  What is going on?  Isn't this supposed to be the week that I freak out? I could be ...

It is no secret of my fondness for Coach C.  I had the pleasant opportunity to track her all throughout Kona and was able to watch the live feed as she crossed the finish line with a smile and her hands held way above her head in triumph. They say that your first time to Kona is a learning experience but Coach did more than learn.  She performed extremely well on the big stage and she will tell you all about it in a few moments. Coach did something that was rather smart leading up to the race.  She chronicled her last 10 days pri...

It has been brought to my attention recently that a Tri Club team in the Dallas area is not doing well and is possibly going to fold or close its doors.  This saddens me because I believe that triathlon is the best sport in the world and that we need to get more people involved in the sport and clubs will help do that. I have investigated why the club is failing and losing its participants and I have found out that it boils down to it being more of a social club and not necessarily a triathlon club.  In other words it was more about hangin...
